Unveil the Impact: Four Golfers Boost Short Game Precision with Rife SCS1 Wedges

CHECK IT OUT: Four golf enthusiasts get fitted for the Rife SCS1 wedges

New on the market for this season, Rife brings you the SCS1 wedges, aiming to provide high-quality, blade-style wedges at a fraction of the cost of several competitors. With a stainless steel construction and a fine satin silver PVD-plated finish, these wedges exude a premium appearance that will entice golfers, regardless of their skill level.

These wedges boast top-notch materials, including a sturdier-feeling steel wedge-flex shaft, precision-milled grooves, and a Lamkin 360 premium grip, all of which contribute to improved control and overall performance. The SCS1 wedges are available in various loft options, ranging from 48° up to 60°, and also come in two distinct grind options, offering golfers even more options to ameliorate their performance.

The S-sole is ideally suited for those who maintain a steeper angle of attack and play the majority of their shots with a square clubface, while the C-sole has been tailored with more heel and toe relief for those who prefer to open and close the face at address to achieve different shots around the greens.

To assess the performance of these wedges, we invited four Golf Monthly readers to the scenic Foxhills resort in Surrey, where they would have the opportunity to test the SCS1 wedges and benefit from Sky Sports' renowned golf coach Simon Holmes to see what short-game improvements could be made using these new wedges.

Handicap: 23

Current Wedges: Cleveland CBX

Fitted For: Rife SCS1 S.Sole 48, 52°, 56°

Simon Holmes' Assessment: "Essentially, we aimed to enhance Simon's technique a bit, giving him a better understanding of the diverse use of the various clubs. I'm not sure he fully comprehended how to utilize the different clubs to match various carries and rollouts. Then equipped with a well-suited wedge can be a game-changer because it transforms a weak, spin-lacking shot into something flighted and gripped, providing a greater understanding of the magic."

Bobby's Remarks: "Having never been fitted for clubs before, receiving a bit of advice on what's needed and what clubs would optimize my swing was fantastic. I currently possess a 50°, 54, and a 60°. According to Simon, I might have outgrown these wedges a tad. I don't require as much forgiveness; I can make use of something offering more control. The SCS1 wedges felt great on every shot. I appreciate the look of the full-face grooves of the wedges because I sometimes put the toe down when chipping."

Handicap: 18.7

Current Wedges: Callaway CF16 / MD4

Fitted For: Rife SCS1 S.Sole 50, 54°, 58°

Simon Holmes' Evaluation: "Simon's style tended to pit his left side up and backward, causing a scooped hit at best, some thin shots, and some duffs. We rectified that and then realized he had minimal weight in the shaft and no head weight at all. I believe when we put him into a heavier club, it was much simpler for him to comprehend where it was in space, and with practice he timed his shots better."

Simon's Remarks: "Boasting confidence in my wedges and being able to chip around the greens is crucial to me. Having the new clubs gave me a sense of confidence in the swing, and allowing the club to perform the work seemed to fare well. Trying to generate power, I found it more sensible to match the club weight of the three wedges I was using."

Handicap: 13.9

Current Wedges: Cleveland RTX Full Face / Sim 2

Fitted For: Rife SCS1 S.Sole 50, 54°, 58°

Simon Holmes' Evaluation: "Richard was an intriguing one as he's a right-handed cricket batsman playing golf left-handed. Consequently, he has an excessive amount of shaft lean, the ball back, hands forward which are all elements that make him steeper into the ball. It was evident that it resulted in a stabby shot on difficult ones. Once his ball position was corrected and he was made shallower, even a 56° Rife wedge flew well. I believe this was one of our major successes where technique had to change, but the equipment had to change as well."

Richard's Remarks: "I hadn't had a fitting for any wedges before and I sought a better feel with my wedges. With the Rife clubs that I was using, I could feel where the head was, and it just felt better in my hands. I'd been utilizing Cleveland RTX Full Face wedges, which max out at 64°. With the Rife wedges, I could time those sorts of shots better. The flight altered as well, and I could trust where it was landing and reacting."

Handicap: 7.5

Current Wedges: Cleveland RTZ Zipcore

Fitted For: Rife SCS1 C.Sole 50, 54°, 58°

Simon Holmes' Evaluation: "Upon observing Dom, it was clear that the ball was remarkably far forward. We modified his technique to help him understand that his lack of confidence wasn’t a psychological matter. We had to regulate the bounce on his three wedges, enabling him to achieve consistent contact on the ground."

Dominic's Remarks: "The fitting was a success. It truly taught me what to do and how the design of the wedges could help. They felt great off the face and sat low to the ground, all while possessing some bounce, which offers more confidence. There was more spin, and a more consistent flight with the Rife wedges. They all seemed to set off on a similar trajectory, which was encouraging to witness."
