In the summer of 2023, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, experienced a series of heatwaves that broke records and brought unusually high temperatures. The German Weather Service (DWD) reported that the average temperature in the southwest during June 2023 was a remarkable 19.8 degrees, ranking it as the second hottest June on record.

The sunshine hours in Baden-Württemberg during June 2023 were also significantly higher than the long-term average, with a total of 298 hours recorded. This figure is nearly 50 percent more than the typical June average of 202 hours.

However, the rainfall in Baden-Württemberg during June 2023 was unusually low, with only 77 liters per square meter recorded, which is a quarter less than the usual amount. Despite this, the DWD reported that the sunshine hours in Baden-Württemberg were significantly above the usual amount.

Fast forward to June 2025, and Baden-Württemberg once again found itself in the midst of extreme weather conditions. The DWD reported that the region experienced a mix of heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms, producing up to 150 liters of rain per square meter. This was driven by a "summer monsoon" weather pattern, causing continuous torrential rain, especially south of the Danube, and resulting in local flooding risks.

At the same time, heat warnings were issued for Baden-Württemberg, with temperatures in the region reaching highs of around 38 degrees Celsius in mid-2025, indicating hotter than average conditions for the month. This contrasted with average expectations for June in Reutlingen (a Baden-Württemberg city) based on historical weather data, where typical temperature and rainfall values are lower and more balanced.

Despite the intense rain events, favorable mild temperatures during the flowering period and the absence of frost or hail in Baden-Württemberg in 2025 contributed to a forecast above-average apple harvest. This suggests that the weather was overall conducive to agriculture, despite the extreme conditions.

In summary, June 2023 and 2025 in Baden-Württemberg were characterized by hotter and wetter conditions than historical averages, with both years experiencing severe thunderstorms and considerable rainfall alongside heat extremes. These weather patterns had significant impacts on both the weather patterns and agricultural outcomes in the region.
