Inside Denmark: Beer, Boycotts, and Binge Drinking

Welcome back to Inside Denmark, where we're diving headfirst into the stories shaping this Scandinavian nation. This week, we're taking a look at the tale of two beverages - one a global powerhouse, and the other a quirky local favorite with a surprisingly strong comeback.

Carlsberg's Crusade Against Excess

Denmark's most famous brewery, Carlsberg, has launched a bold new campaign, "Drink with Respect," aimed at curbing young people's alcohol consumption. At first glance, this move appears to contradict the company's interests. But a closer look reveals a more nuanced picture.

Tuborg, a Carlsberg brand, is taking a stand against peer pressure encouraging youths to binge drink and advocating for moderation. According to Peter Haahr Nielsen, CEO of Carlsberg Denmark, this is their "biggest campaign ever with this kind of message." By partnering with pub chain Rekom, they are increasing efforts to promote alcohol-free products in their 89 bars across Denmark.

Sobering StatisticsDenmark has been debating its youth drinking culture, particularly in the context of recent changes in legal age limits. New rules now prohibit the sale of drinks with more than six percent alcohol to youths aged 16 to 18, who could previously buy drinks containing up to 16.5 percent alcohol. Police can now also nominate "nightlife zones" where bars will be forbidden from selling alcohol to under-18s after 10pm.

Jolly Cola's Wholesome Resurgence

Denmark's Jolly Cola, once considered a joke product or inferior to big-name brands like Coca-Cola or Pepsi, has been given a new life. This revival might be due to Denmark's boycott movement against American products, a topic we covered in a previous edition of this column.

Sales of Jolly Cola at Rema 1000 supermarkets were 13 times higher last month compared to the same period last year. Other outlets have also reported significant increases in demand for the Danish cola. Surprised by this sudden resurgence, the brewery, Bryggeriet Vestfyen, has had to increase production to meet the demand.

A Nostalgic BoostWith no stores carrying Jolly Cola as a permanent range, many consumers have been searching in vain for the Danish product as a replacement for American cola they are now opting out of. As a result, Bryggeriet Vestfyen has had to swiftly source packaging and required ingredients to expand production.
