Meet Fritz Scholze, the lively 89-year-old resident of a peaceful Waldperlach street, who's been living in his yellow house since the 30s! Mysterious Shoe Drama
As the robust Munich native may tell you, "I'll be 90 in 11 months." He's in excellent shape, and the retired shop window decorator takes great care of his house and garden. Suddenly, since early May, the persistent pensioner found himself with an unwanted chore: managing a collection of shoes. Almost every day, he encounters shoes strewn throughout his garden.

"The shoes are in fantastic condition, no issues at all," chuckles Fritz with amusement. His neighbor has already gathered quite a pile by now. After the initial find, Fritz, ever the detective, sets up a wildlife camera in his garden to catch the cunning culprits in action.
Hide and Sneaker 📹
Fritz was already aware that something unusual was happening at his house, as his external light at the entrance kept flicking on at night. But with the camera monitoring the garden, he's now able to track exactly what's going on at night: night after night, a family of foxes pay a visit to his garden. A mother and her two cubs are the mischievous suspects. The footage captures them snatching, darting around, and playing with the pilfered loot – the shoes – in their mouths.

During sunrises, Fritz assembles the remnants of the night's gathering − the three young thieves have long vanished by daybreak. The collection box by the sidewalk boasts an eclectic assortment: a pink and gray garden clog, a black sandal, a white sneaker, a leather hiking boot, and more.
On sunny days, Fritz places the collection box in front of his garden with a sign urging passerby: "Lost any shoes? They probably belong to our friendly neighborhood foxes!" Some shoes have since found their way back to their rightful owners.

The Munich Animal Shelter in Riem not only cares for pets like cats, dogs, and rabbits but also takes in and rehabilitates sick or abandoned wild animals. Lydia Schübel, a wildlife biologist at the shelter, has some insights about fox behavior and their peculiar taste for pilfering footwear.
"When you're a curious and playful youngster like these foxes, you can't resist picking up and carrying interesting objects − like shoes, toys, or other knick-knacks," explains Lydia Schübel. Intrigued by the novelty, fox cubs may carry and play with objects in order to explore their environment and refine their hunting skills.
Foxes in urban areas have adapted to city life, but their behavior can differ from that of wild foxes in forested environments. Urban foxes may be smaller and more social, which could explain why they're increasingly spotted in cities around the world.

So, why does the gang of shoe-stealing foxes from Waldperlach prefer Fritz Scholze's garden and that of his neighbor for their stash? Lydia Schübel points out that foxes are known to choose areas where they feel safe, and their den is likely nearby.
"Fitz and his neighbor don't need to worry − this strange habit should abate on its own in a few weeks when the foxes have grown up," assures Lydia Schübel. Additionally, she mentions that urban foxes are rarely infected with the fox tapeworm, so there's no cause for concern.
"I'd say just roll with it!" Lydia suggests when asked about whether the quirky shoe situation bothers Fritz. The jovial 89-year-old waves it off with a smile, "Pfff, you learn to live with it." 🤩
