In a series of recent developments, the spotlight has been on two high-profile figures in Mexico: Luis Cárdenas Palomino and Israel Vallarta.

On July 5, 2021, Cárdenas Palomino, a former director of police research at the defunct Federal Investigation Agency (AFI), was arrested for the crime of torture against Mario Vallarta and two others. Cárdenas Palomino was also implicated in the operation carried out on December 9, 2005, at the Las Chinitas ranch, where Israel Vallarta Cisneros and French citizen Florence Cassez were arrested.

Israel Vallarta Cisneros, who was accused at the time of belonging to a presumed kidnapping gang known as "The Zodiaco," was released on August 1. It is not yet known where he is currently being held.

The arrest of Vallarta and Cassez was presented on national television as a real-time operation, but it was later proven to be a setup. This revelation has added fuel to the ongoing controversy surrounding the case.

Meanwhile, Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico City, has spoken out about the Vallarta case. She has accused the case of involving setups, torture, and media collusion. Sheinbaum also stated that the Vallarta case is an example of how justice operated during Felipe Calderón's term.

In a separate issue, Sheinbaum has responded to criticism over the appointment of Pablo Gómez to the Presidential Commission. She stated that they were pressured to appoint Ugalde instead.

As for Cárdenas Palomino, he is currently imprisoned at the Social Rehabilitation Center No. 1, also known as Altiplano. However, he was transferred from the Altiplano prison on July 30, 2025, and his current location has not been officially confirmed. The information about his new location will be provided officially by government authorities, likely the Mexican Interior Secretariat or the relevant prison administration.

These developments have sparked a renewed interest in the cases of Cárdenas Palomino and Vallarta, and the broader issues of justice and corruption in Mexico. As the story continues to unfold, more facts are likely to come to light, shedding further light on these complex and controversial cases.
