Unstoppable Whitney Girls Volleyball Team edges out Artesia, maintaining their perfect league record
Artesia High Football Remains Undefeated, Whitney High Girls Volleyball Wins
In the world of high school sports, there were several notable performances and results this week.
Artesia High's football team continued their impressive run, remaining undefeated with a 41-7 victory over Mountain View High. Senior quarterback Charlie Lopez completed four passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Julius Padilla caught three passes for 107 yards.
Meanwhile, in the volleyball court, the Whitney High girls' team secured a hard-fought win against Artesia High on September 25, 2024. The match ended with scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-21, marking a significant victory for Whitney High. The team was led by Emma Prowse, a sophomore outside hitter, who had 17 kills and 5 aces, and Rachel Moyher, a senior outside hitter, who contributed with 7 kills.
Last season, Whitney High finished with a record of 13-17 and 5-5 in league. However, this year, they are in a strong position, currently standing at 16-7 overall and 4-0 in league. This puts them in a good position to reach the CIF-Southern Section playoffs for the first time since 2019.
Whitney High's volleyball team will look to continue their winning streak when they host Oxford Academy on Friday to end the first half of league play.
In other news, Estancia High's football team recorded their second shutout of the season with a 38-0 victory over Santiago High. Jeff Brown, a junior running back, was exceptional, rushing for 282 yards on 28 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Heriberto Sanchez Martinez was six of seven for 63 yards and a touchdown.
However, it hasn't been a smooth ride for all teams. Cerritos High has lost two straight games, including a 41-21 loss to West Torrance High. In the same vein, Glenn High has lost three straight matches after a fast start to the season.
In the volleyball scene, Djulianne Goze, a junior outside hitter for Artesia High, had a standout game with 24 kills against Whitney High.
Coach Mark Kato, who coached the Whitney High School girls' volleyball team in 2024 after their last school championship, will be hoping to guide his team to more victories in the second half of the league season. Whitney High last won a league title in 2000, and with their current form, they are certainly contenders for this year's title.
