Teen Phenom Summer McIntosh Giving World Records a Run for Their Money
Breaking barriers left and right, Summer McIntosh's recent exploits at the Canadian Swimming Trials are putting her in the conversation for one of swimming's all-time great performances. The 18-year-old sensation posted the second-fastest 200m butterfly in history, stunning the swimming world with a time of 2:02.26.
She narrowly missed Liu Zige's world record of 2:01.81 set back in 2009, a testament to her staggering speed and skill. And, she has already set world records in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley this week.
To put her recent achievements into perspective, no swimmer had gotten within a second of Zige's long-standing mark until McIntosh. Her performances are a clear indication that she's redefining the limits of what's possible in swimming.
"I actually rate this race higher than my other ones," McIntosh said, reflecting on her incredible performance. "I would almost rate it higher than the 200 IM just because this world record is the hardest one to get in my personal opinion."
McIntosh has also demonstrated her versatility, setting the third-fastest 800m freestyle in history at these trials. She's slated to compete in the 400m individual medley, the race where she already holds the world record.
Being just 0.01 seconds away from Zige's world record after 150m shows McIntosh's impressive pace, and while she couldn't keep it up down the stretch this time, it's clear that she's only getting started.
McIntosh remains optimistic about her chances of breaking Zige’s world record, stating, "I think world records are meant to be broken. At some point, maybe I can get closer and closer to it."
