Germany considers hosting the Olympic Games for the first time since 1936, with multiple cities—including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and North Rhine-Westphalia—expressing interest in the bid. Despite infrastructure challenges and local opposition, organizers eye the potential benefits, particularly for unity and promoting a sustainable, inclusive event.

The proposed bid, called "Berlin+," involves collaboration with neighboring states Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein. The aim is to utilize existing facilities and minimize construction, aligned with the vision of a sustainable Olympic Games.

The earliest targeted edition for the German bid is 2036, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the controversial 1936 Berlin Games. However, if successful, the bid will need to navigate through an international selection process and address domestic concerns, such as public opinion and funding priorities.

Berlin's Senator for Interior and Sport has voiced opposition to a public referendum, favoring ongoing dialogue with citizens about the bid's implications. Opponents of the bid argue that public funds would be more advantageously spent on grassroots sports clubs, which reflects ongoing debates about the cost and legacy of mega-events.

Supporters of the bid argue that hosting the Olympics offers an opportunity to redefine the city and region’s Olympic legacy, given the historical context of the 1936 Games. The International Paralympic Committee president, Andrew Parsons, has publicly welcomed Berlin’s interest.

The German government has suggested a 2040 bid may be fitting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of German reunification. However, multiple regions and cities within Germany may also aspire to host the Games, leading to competitive national selection proceedings.

If successful, the Olympic Games could serve as a platform for Germany to showcase its unity, hospitality, and organizational prowess, as France demonstrated during the 2024 Paris Games. Berlin's proposed bid emphasizes a focus on regional collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainability, which could position the city favorably in the international competition to host future Olympic Games.

  1. The Commission, in light of the German bid for the Olympic Games, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during the construction process and event management of the Games.
  2. Amidst the ongoing debates about the cost and legacy of mega-events, the migration of workers from various regions to Berlin for the preparation and execution of the Games could be a pressing policy-and-legislation issue.
  3. The proposed directive on worker radiation protection might also consider war-and-conflicts scenarios, ensuring the safety of workers involved in reconstruction efforts post any unfortunate incidents like car-accidents or accidents during the racing events such as the grand-prix.
  4. In addition to politics and general news, sports coverage could dominate the media landscape during the buildup to and the hosting of the Olympic Games, with events like football (soccer), basketball, numerous European leagues, and tennis gaining significant attention.
  5. Simultaneously, crime-and-justice issues such as the potential for sports-betting scandals could arise, calling for appropriate measures to ensure fair play throughout the Olympics.
  6. As the German bid proceeds, the restored Olympic Stadium could host not only the opening and closing ceremonies but also other sports events such as athletics, football, and basketball, appealing to enthusiasts all around Europe and beyond.
  7. If successful, the Champions League, NBA, and golf tournaments might plan their events around the Olympic Games, boosting sports tourism and livening up the city's atmosphere.
  8. With the focus on sustainability, the commission could advocate for the transition of auto-racing events from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
  9. To address funding priorities, the city could partner with corporations and sponsors, potentially offering luxury boxes and extravagant hospitality suites at venues like the new Berlin Stadium for the Champions League and other high-profile sports events.
  10. As Berlin gears up for the Olympic Games, citizens and policymakers can work together to ensure a harmonious blend of sports, politics, historic reconstruction, and general development, creating a lasting Olympic legacy that embraces unity, inclusivity, and sustainability.
