Unspeakable suffering of Gazans is condemned by Spain's monarch
Spain has taken a firm position against Israel in the wake of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with the Spanish government imposing a series of measures aimed at halting the crisis.
According to local authorities, over 100,000 people participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Madrid, reflecting the growing concern and sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians. The demonstrations had a significant impact, leading to the cancellation of the final stage of the Vuelta cycling race.
In a bold move, the Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, announced a complete arms embargo against Israel. This ban prohibits ships carrying weapons to Israel from using Spanish ports and prevents planes transporting military goods for Israel from crossing Spanish airspace.
Additionally, Spain imposed a travel ban on individuals directly involved in the alleged genocide, human rights violations, and war crimes in Gaza. Sanctions were also imposed on goods from Israeli settlements, and extra funds were provided for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Prime Minister Sánchez expressed his "deep admiration" for the protesters and suggested excluding Israel from sports competitions "as long as the barbarity continues" in Gaza. This suggestion comes as Israel does not currently have an ambassador in Madrid, as the position has been vacant since 2024.
King Felipe VI of Spain, who rarely speaks out on international issues, also denounced the "unspeakable suffering" of hundreds of thousands of Gazans under Israeli bombardment in the Palestinian territory. His statement was made during a visit to Egypt, following which he denounced the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The latest round of conflict between Israel and Palestine has been criticized by the Spanish government, with King Felipe VI's visit to Egypt serving as a clear indication of Spain's solidarity with the Palestinians. Spain recalled its ambassador to Israel last week due to heated exchanges after the government announced measures aimed at stopping the crisis in Gaza.
The Spanish government, which recognized the State of Palestine in May 2024, has become one of Israel's fiercest critics in Europe. The latest episode in the conflict between Israel and Palestine has degenerated into an unbearable humanitarian crisis, prompting strong action from the Spanish government.
