Unsolved "XY" Homicide Case Remains Active
In the quiet town of Nienburg, Germany, the memory of Souzan Barakat remains vivid and heartbreaking. On a fateful day in December 2011, Souzan, a 13-year-old girl, was brutally taken from this world by her own father, Muhammad Ali Barakat, in the small town of Stolzenau.
Souzan was on her way to return to Asendorf, where she had been living under the care of the youth welfare office, when she was tragically killed. The details of her final moments are harrowing; she was beaten at home by her father before being shot and killed on a public street.
The crime scene was not far from where candles have been burning for several years, a constant reminder of the loss and the unanswered questions that linger.
Muhammad Ali Barakat, the suspect in Souzan's murder, fled the scene of the crime in a silver-gray VW Golf Variant and has remained at large since then. Despite numerous efforts, including broadcasts on ZDF's "Aktenzeichen XY" in 2011 and 2025, no decisive clue has been found yet.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the entire Barakat family has gone into hiding abroad. Tips regarding Muhammad Ali Barakat's whereabouts can be given to the Nienburg police station under the phone number 05021 92120.
The community of Nienburg and beyond continue to remember Souzan and her tragic death. Emotional comments about Souzan and her murder case are still being posted on Facebook. A local resident wrote, "I believe Muhammad Ali Barakat has fled to his home country."
Another resident, a Nienburger, expressed their hope, "Oh my god, is it already so long ago? I hope that the man is finally found and held accountable."
The case of Souzan's murder has kept the entire district of Nienburg on edge, a chilling reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of justice. Souzan made a clear statement that she wanted no further contact with her father after a failed reconciliation attempt in Stolzenau. Yet, her father's whereabouts remain unknown.
As the years pass, the hope for justice in Souzan's case remains strong. The community continues to remember Souzan, a bright light extinguished too soon, and the search for her father, Muhammad Ali Barakat, continues.
