San Jose's Cold Case Victim Identified After Four Decades
Forty-two years after her gruesome murder, authorities have uncovered the identity of a woman whose torso was discovered in a California field in 1981, officials confirmed. The victim, 54-year-old Vivian Moss, worked as a grandmother and active community member prior to her tragic demise.
On July 11, 1981, the decomposed body of Moss, missing her head, arms, and legs, was found in an empty field in San Jose. Her body bore several stab wounds to the chest, but she was missing any form of identification, leaving the case stalled. Two religious pendants nearby—one bearing the image of Saint Christopher and another depicting the Virgin Mary—were the only items found with the remains.
For over four decades, Moss's identity remained a mystery, and the perpetrator remained at large[1][3][5]. In 2023, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office partnered with Parabon NanoLabs' forensic genealogists, leading to a genetic genealogy breakthrough and the confirmation of Moss as the murder victim[1][3][4][5].
The tragic disappearance of Moss may be linked to her duties as an elementary school employee in Oakland. She was also an active member of the Mt. Zion Spiritual Church in the same city[3][5]. The investigation is still underway, and authorities are turning to the public for help to solve the cold case and bring justice for Moss.
In an interview with San Francisco station KGO, Deputy District Attorney Rob Baker appealed to the public for any information about Moss and her suspected killer[4]. "Does anyone know Vivian Moss, or what might have led to her killing? Were there any men or people in her life that could have posed a threat?" he asked.
"Please help us uncover the truth about Vivian," Baker pleaded. "We know who she was now. We have a name. We just want to understand what happened to her."
