Unsettling void arises at Pittsburgh Steelers position following latest transaction, fueling worries about quarterback prospect for Aaron Rodgers

The Steelers' New Offensive Prowess: No Rodgers, but Trey Sermon and Others Join the Party

For far too long, chatter surrounding the NFL has been centered on one quarterback — Aaron Rodgers. Rumors of his move to the Steel City after his New York Jets stint have been prevalent all offseason. But alas, Rodgers remains elusive, leaving us in a holding pattern. As we wait, the Steelers have been busy recruiting new talent.

Enter running back Trey Sermon, who snagged a roster spot after participating in Pittsburgh's rookie minicamp on a tryout last week. Sermon, a 26-year-old veteran, was previously a third-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. His resume includes a season with the 49ers, a stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, and time with the Indianapolis Colts. In four seasons, Sermon has racked up 134 carries, 505 yards, and three touchdowns across 42 games.

Joining him are fellow running back Max Hurleman and offensive tackle Garreth Warren. The Steelers' running back room is now packed with Kaleb Johnson, Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell, and the talented trio of new recruits. The team, however, still lacks a reliable wide receiver after the departure of the top performer, George Pickens, who joined the Dallas Cowboys.

The NFL Buzz

Despite the arrival of Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and Robert Woods, the Steelers could still use another reliable wide receiver. While Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer claims the Steelers are high on Austin, many fans and perhaps even Rodgers himself hope for more reinforcements. With rumors swirling that the Steelers could target a wide receiver from Rodgers' former team, the Green Bay Packers, speculation persists.

If Rodgers does sign with Pittsburgh, the Packers' Romeo Doubs could be a potential target. Doubs has experience playing with Rodgers and has developed a connection with him during their time together in Green Bay. This familiarity could provide a seamless transition in the passing game for the Steelers if Rodgers decides to join the team.

However, it's worth noting that the Packers have bolstered their receiving corps with the selections of young talent such as Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the 2025 NFL Draft. This may reduce the likelihood of Doubs being traded. Other Packers receivers might become available depending on the team's roster needs and the influence of Rodgers' potential signing.

In the end, the Steelers' business over the coming weeks and months will hinge on whether Rodgers signs. Art Rooney II, the team president, has already publicly expressed his hopes. The team's 2025 NFL Draft strategy, which prioritized re-establishing a "physicality and big man presence," also suggests an incoming quarterback. So, for now, our focus remains on Rodgers, as eyes are fixed on him and his potential role in the Steelers' future.
