Unsettling: Post-Match Melee Turns into Robbery for Alenquer and Benfica Players

A Scuffle in Lisbon's District Leagues Stirs Up Controversy

Last weekend's match in Lisbon's third division between Sport Alenquer e Benfica and Sociedade Recreativa e Desportiva de Negrais (SRDN) has become a hot topic on social media. On Friday, Sport Alenquer e Benfica shared a statement about an alleged altercation that took place after their winning match on Sunday.

Apparently, following the game, members of the SRDN team ambushed the Alenquer e Benfica players, even after the referee, police, and fans had left the venue. According to Alenquer e Benfica's statement, their players not only suffered physical assaults but also had personal belongings stolen by their attackers.

The statement from Alenquer e Benfica reads, "We are outraged to learn about the inexplicable assault on our entourage at the end of the senior football match in Negrais last Sunday... the criminal ambush carried out by federated athletes from SRDN... left our club's entourage in shock." Photos shared by the team show injuries to the athletes' heads.

The statement continues, "Sport Alenquer e Benfica condemns this total lack of decency in the premeditated assaults that took place, a reflection of a rotten society that brings into sport what it should never be: the stage for intolerance and gratuitous violence, at the expense of the results." The team expressed disappointment over the lack of response and communication from SRDN.

The injured Alenquer players were treated at the Hospital Amadora-Sintra and the Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira, and some still require monitoring. One player underwent surgery due to a retinal detachment. The police were called to the scene to collect facts and potentially charge those involved with assault, public disorder, or violations of Portugal's Law Against Violence in Sports.
