Unseeded Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko shocks top-ranked Coco Gauff, advancing to the NBO quarterfinals
Rising Star Victoria Mboko Shines in Montreal, Advances to WTA 1000 Quarterfinals
Victoria Mboko, a promising Canadian tennis player, continues to make waves in the world of women's tennis. At the ongoing WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, Mboko has advanced to the quarterfinals, marking a significant milestone in her career.
Mboko's journey to the last eight began with a convincing victory over Kimberly Birrell. She then upset 23rd seed and former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin, before snapping Marie Bouzkova's seven-match winning streak. The highlight of her run so far was the defeat of the top seed, Coco Gauff of the United States.
In a remarkable display of resilience, Mboko did not drop a single game on serve against Gauff in the match. The victory was all the more impressive given that Mboko is the second youngest Canadian to reach a WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 1990, behind only Bianca Andreescu.
Gauff, who committed 22 unforced errors in the match, doubled-faulted twice to set up two match points for Mboko. The young Canadian saved all four breakpoints against Gauff and clinched the victory in just 62 minutes.
Mboko's record in all competitions this season improved to 50-9, including 24-8 against players ranked above her. The victory against Gauff marked her as the second teenager, and the first Canadian, to defeat the American star.
Mboko's success in Montreal follows her historic run at the 2025 Canadian Open, where she became the youngest Canadian and the youngest overall player since 2015 to reach the semi-finals in a WTA 1000 tournament.
Elsewhere in the day session, Marta Kostyuk and Elena Rybakina advanced to the quarterfinals. Kostyuk recovered from a first-set loss to defeat McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round. Rybakina rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win over Dayana Yastremska, who defended three match points before losing. Kostyuk and Rybakina will play each other in the next round.
After the match, Mboko expressed her gratitude for the crowd's support. She is the last Canadian standing in the singles draw at the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal. Mboko will play the winner of Saturday's late match between Zhu Lin and Jéssica Bouzas Maneiro in the quarterfinals.
