Gray Skies and Light Showers - Summer Still Away, Thunderstorms Dampen Pentecost Weekend

Unseasonably cool weather marked by violent thunderstorms and hail showers during the holiday of Pentecost.

Get ready for some cloudy days and occasional sprinkles instead of a sweltering summer over the long weekend and holidays coming up. While we dodged a bullet with the turbulent thunderstorms in the southeastern parts of Germany on Wednesday, there's a good chance more storms could brew.

For now, the threat of severe weather has subsided, but don't count out the possibility of thunderstorms forming in the damp air. Keep an eye on the sky in the upcoming days as there's still a chance for some intense storms.

If you're starting your Pentecost weekend on Friday, be prepared for cloudy skies, scattered showers, and the occasional thunderstorm. The region southeastern Germany will see the most sunshine, with temperatures reaching a balmy 26°C. For everyone else across the country, expect temperatures between 17°C and 24°C, with a cool breeze that might make the weather feel uncomfortable.

The weekend weather isn't looking much better. Saturday and Pentecost Sunday are shaping up to be mostly overcast, wet, and prone to thunderstorms. The wind will pick up on Sunday, even becoming stormy at times, especially in mountainous regions and near the coast. Temperatures will hover between 16°C and 22°C, with the southeastern region reaching a maximum of 25°C, the closest to summer temperatures we'll get.

Are Storms on the Horizon for Germany?

While the general weather pattern isn't indicative of severe storms across the country, there's a chance isolated, powerful thunderstorms could form, especially south of the Danube, particularly on Saturday. These storms might bring strong winds, hail, and heavy rain, potentially causing some issues. Stay alert, as thunderstorms can't be ruled out in other parts of the country too.

Thunderstorms are expected to continue on Sunday, with wind picking up across the board, and storm gusts possible in mountainous regions and near the sea. It will remain quite wet at the Alps due to prolonged rain. While everything points towards drier conditions in many areas of Europe, locally it could feel like the stormy weather we saw on Wednesday, although likely not on the same scale.

The weather should improve from Pentecost Monday, becoming more summer-like as high pressure brings friendly conditions and higher temperatures. Temperatures will start the week rather mild, with highs between 16°C and 22°C. The return of sunny summer weather seems imminent. Towards the end of the week, temperatures could even hit a sweltering 30°C.

The Commission has also been consulted on the following issues: potential thunderstorms and weather-forecasting, given the uncertain weather conditions in Germany during the upcoming weekend and holiday season. Despite the current pattern not strongly indicative of widespread severe storms, isolated thunderstorms packing strong winds, hail, and heavy rain could form, mainly south of the Danube on Saturday and Sunday.
