Unscheduled live streaming of summer camps at the Waterloo arena gets an update from the city authorities.
In a recent development, it has been revealed that an unscheduled livestreaming incident occurred at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex (WMRC) between May 1 and July 23. The livestreaming, which was not authorised and happened without the knowledge of City officials, was discovered on July 23.
According to LiveBarn Inc., the company that owns and operates the livestreaming equipment, none of the content streamed during this period was downloaded or shared. The livestreaming equipment was active at various facilities, including ice pads, within the WMRC.
The City of Waterloo was notified about the incident on July 23, and LiveBarn confirmed that only the WMRC was affected in this unscheduled livestreaming incident. All impacted facility booking holders and guardians have been notified about the incident.
The livestreaming partnership is with the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, and the LiveBarn cameras were only supposed to be used during games for the Waterloo Minor Hockey Association and accessible through a subscription. However, it appears that the livestreaming included footage of children participating in summer camp programs, as the camp programs were being held at the WMRC at the time of the issue.
The city is continuing to investigate the incident and its implications. Officials say additional rental groups may have been affected by the livestreaming incident. To ensure the privacy and security of its facilities and users, the city is taking steps to review procedures and determine if policy changes are needed.
It is worth noting that there are no search results indicating that there was an unauthorised livestreaming of City of Waterloo arenas during May 1 to July 23, nor any documented impacts or policy changes related to such an event. The city is working with LiveBarn, the Waterloo Minor Hockey Association, and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario to review procedures and determine if policy changes are needed.
Interestingly, the livestreaming was also inadvertently happening at the City of Cambridge's Hespeler Arena, Dickson Arena, Cambridge Sports Park, and facility ice pads, although the extent and duration of this are yet to be determined.
The city is cooperating with relevant authorities to address the issue and prevent future incidents. As of now, LiveBarn cameras at all City of Waterloo arenas are currently offline. More updates on this developing story will be provided as information becomes available.
