UN's leader upholds two-state resolution as answer to Palestinian predicament
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the current situation in Gaza, describing it as "horrendous." In a statement, Guterres highlighted the dramatic obstacles in the distribution of humanitarian aid, stating that at a certain point, it completely stopped.
Guterres pointed to the massive destruction of neighborhoods in Gaza City, which he believes is a result of Israel's military operations. The Secretary-General expressed deep concern over the large-scale civilian casualties and urban devastation caused by these operations.
The UN Chief also expressed concern over the consequences of the situation in Gaza, including famine, lack of access to health support, continued displacement, and the imminent risk of losing lives. He stated that the situation is morally, politically, and legally intolerable.
Guterres reaffirmed his support for the two-state solution as the only viable path to settle the Israel-Palestine conflict. He did not provide any specific timeline for implementing this solution, nor did he mention any specific alternatives.
The Secretary-General also expressed a willingness to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump at the UN next week. There is no indication that he plans to meet with other Israeli government leaders at this time.
Guterres pushed back against claims that recognizing a Palestinian state would reward Hamas or undermine peace. He does not view recognizing a Palestinian state as a gift to Hamas, but rather as a gift to the Palestinian people who have suffered because of the group.
However, Guterres did not provide details on how the international community would mobilize to ensure the two-state solution prevails. He also stated that a one-state solution with the subjugation of the Palestinian people without rights is intolerable in the 21st century.
Guterres did not mention any specific consequences if the two-state solution is not implemented. The current Israeli government leader is Prime Minister Netanyahu, and the head of state is President Isaac Herzog.
The Secretary-General also expressed concern over the massive killing of civilians in Gaza, and he stated that the situation in Gaza is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a moral and political one as well. He did not view recognizing a Palestinian state as a gift to Hamas, but rather as a step towards peace and justice for the Palestinian people.
