Thunderstorm Chaos Sweeps Bavaria - Storm Damages, Car Accidents, and School Roof Collapses
Roofless Gym and Track Disruptions in Bavaria - Weather-Related Destruction - Unroofed Gym in Bavaria: Conditions Lack Safety Measures
From a beach-like setting to a gym without a roof... that's how the weather in Bavaria has been swinging lately! Storms and thunderstorms have been rampaging across the state since the weekend, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
In some extreme cases, the local police and fire departments have had their hands full. But, fortunately, no major emergencies have been reported so far.
In the Upper Franconian Trebgast (district of Kulmbach), a high school suffered a drastic makeover, courtesy of mother nature. On Sunday afternoon, a fierce wind tore off the roof of the school's sports hall, taking a photovoltaic system along with it. The roof then came crashing down, burying the solar panels under the rubble. Estimated damages amount to a staggering 150,000 euros. The local sports club was reportedly using the gymnasium facilities.
On the A73 motorway near Zapfendorf (district of Bamberg), a driver took a wild ride in the pouring rain on Sunday night. The traffic police in Bamberg revealed that the driver collided with the guardrail but walked away unscathed. However, the car didn't fare as well, with roughly 25,000 euros in damages. The driver was fined for failing to adjust speed to the weather conditions.
40 storm-related operations in Lower Franconia
Lower Franconia has seen its fair share of action, with 40 storm-related operations necessary to clear fallen trees and flooded roads on Sunday afternoon. But fortunately, there were no further incidents overnight, a police spokesman said. Slippery roads also caused several accidents, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The police in Middle Franconia reported a total of five storm-related operations since Sunday afternoon, including a flooded basement, a flooded street, and a fallen tree. A brief closure was needed on the A6 motorway between Neuendettelsau and Schwabach due to flooding, but normal service resumed shortly after. No storm-related operations were reported in the Upper Palatinate, Upper Bavaria, or Swabia. No injuries were reported initially.
Train services back on track
Train services experienced several track closures and delays due to debris on the tracks overnight. However, by Sunday evening, the Hof-Schwandorf line had been reopened, and normal service resumed between Nuremberg and Ansbach the following morning.
More thunderstorms expected
The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts more thunderstorms, hail, and gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour in southern Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate on Monday afternoon. Be aware, though, that the risk of severe weather is highest near the Alps.
On Tuesday, the DWD warns of more isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong wind from the southwest in the second half of the day.

Despite the Banagara Commission being asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, the recent weather in Bavaria has been a greater concern, with thunderstorms and storms rampaging across the state since the weekend. The weather, in its fury, not only affected civilians but also led to incidents such as a car collision due to failing to adjust speed to the weather conditions, as reported by the Bamberg police.
