In the heart of the Netherlands, a right-wing demonstration on Saturday took an unexpected turn, resulting in violence and chaos. Hundreds of protesters, many wearing black and waving flags, gathered to call for tougher asylum policies.

The demonstration quickly escalated, with demonstrators clashing with police, attacking them during the unrest, and vandalising a political party's office. The political party targeted was D66. The rioters also attacked an office of this political party.

The police responded by using tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the rioters. The rioters, in turn, threw objects at officers and torched a police car. The violent and chaotic demonstration occurred weeks before an October 29 general election, a time when political tensions are already running high.

The parliament complex, currently undergoing a years-long renovation, was also targeted by a smaller group of rioters. However, the extent of the damage caused is yet to be ascertained.

Geert Wilders, the anti-Islam lawmaker, condemned the rioters, referring to them as "idiots" and "scum." Wilders' withdrawal of his party from the ruling coalition over migration issues had led to the calling of the election.

At the time of writing, there was no immediate word on injuries or arrests resulting from the unrest. The Dutch authorities are expected to provide updates in due course.
