Hooliganism and mayhem took over Paris streets on Saturday night, following the jubilant celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) historical Champions League victory. Two tragic incidents, including a fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old in Dax and a scooter collision fatality in Paris, marred an otherwise euphoric occasion.
The surge of fans flocking to the Champs-Élysées on Sunday, as PSG triumphantly returned home after securing a 5-0 victory against Inter Milan in Munich, was swiftly overshadowed by the ensuing violence and chaos.
According to reports, over 560 people were detained, with 491 of those arrests made within the city limits of Paris. The unrest continued into a second night, resulting in an additional 79 arrests, as authorities struggled to regain control.
These riots, which caused widespread damage, were instigated by individuals seeking to cause trouble, as evidenced by their actions that included firework displays, shop vandalism, and obstruction of major roads. Speaking on the matter, Paris police prefect Laurent Nuñez, pointed the finger at "thousands of people who came to commit acts of violence, rather than celebrate."
Disturbingly, the violence incurred several injuries, with police officers bearing the brunt of the unrest, as over a dozen officers were injured, and one was critically injured, requiring hospitalization in a coma.
In spite of the chaos, around 100,000 fans managed to greet their team in a peaceful open-top bus parade, demonstrating their unwavering support, despite the unfortunate events. As authorities investigate the causes of the riots and assess the damage done, the citizens of Paris and football fans worldwide await a resolution, hoping for a calmer and more peaceful future celebration of the beloved sport they hold dear.
