Unrelenting Thefts and Violent Attacks Persist on Puebla-Mexico Freeway Since 2018
Headline: Ongoing Security Concerns on Puebla-Mexico City Highway Persist, Calling for Enhanced Federal Intervention
The Puebla-Mexico City highway remains a dangerous route, with ongoing security issues including crime and violence making it one of the roads travelers should approach with caution. Despite the highest-risk areas in Mexico often being in states such as Tamaulipas, Baja California, Chihuahua, and Guerrero according to recent advisories, highways near major urban areas like Puebla and Mexico City have also been reported to experience security challenges related to organized crime, robberies, and sometimes violent incidents.
The most dangerous stretch of the Puebla-Mexico highway lies between the San Marcos toll booth in Chalco and the San Martín Texmelucan toll booth, a 62-kilometer corridor notorious for ambushes, express kidnappings, and violent assaults. Criminal activities on the Puebla-Mexico highway typically occur between 6:00 p.m. and midnight, particularly on weekdays.
Since 2018, the Puebla-Mexico highway has been one of the most dangerous routes in Mexico due to constant robberies and assaults. As of the current report, over 13,800 robbery complaints have been filed along the Puebla-Mexico highway since 2018. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 379 assaults were recorded on Puebla's highways, with 126 occurring specifically on the Puebla-Mexico route.
Travelers are advised to take specific safety precautions like traveling during daylight, avoiding isolated areas, and using toll roads when possible for better security and road quality. Night driving is particularly hazardous given poor lighting and road markings in some regions. It is recommended to avoid traveling at night and to maintain vigilance for potential security threats en route.
The ongoing insecurity has sparked calls for stronger federal intervention and improved coordination between state and national law enforcement agencies to address these persistent issues and ensure the safety of travelers on this crucial transportation corridor.
