Summer's here, Italian-style:
As June 2nd rolls around, everyone slows down for some R&R. We've got Liberation Day, Labor Day, Saint Zeno's Day, and other festivities that keep popping up. entrance But, June 2nd is not just another tourist attraction for Italians; it's the Festa della Repubblica, celebrating the birth of their beloved republic. So, grab that ice cream and let's dive right in! 🍦
The birth of the new era:
In 1946, the Italian people took a historic vote, collectively saying goodbye to their monarchical past. The choice was simple: Reign or Representative? With a solid 54.3% to 45.7% margin, the Italian masses chose a republic, giving a final farewell to a system that had ruled for 85 years. 👑
But, it was not just a brief chapter in Italian history; the monarchy had its own share of drama. Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, married his first cousin once removed, Adelaide of Austria, and later cohabited with La Bela Rosin, a commoner. Ironic, isn't it? 💔
The throne was then passed to Umberto, who was efficient in stifling his father's ghost by selling off the extensive horse collection and stamping his own personality on the monarchy. He even had a few mistresses, who were elevated to ladies-in-waiting for the queen. 🏇
Umberto's controversial reign ended in a violent act by Italian-American anarchist Gaetano Bresci. But the story doesn't end here.
Tied to Fascism:
His son, Victor Emmanuel III, continued the legacy. In 1922, he appointed Benito Mussolini to serve as Prime Minister, hoping to restore order. However, this was the beginning of a vicious cycle that helped create a climate for conflict. 🌪️
Mussolini's reign was marred by violence, radical policies, the suppression of freedom, and outright support for Fascist ideals, further eroding public opinion toward the monarchy. 🤘🏽
Victor Emmanuel III's actions during this period left a lasting mark, forever linking the crown with the fascist regime. From outrageous racial purity laws to the tragic fall of Ethiopia and the occupation of Albania, the damage was done. 😒
The end of an era:
After World War II and the armistice, Victor Emmanuel III fled to Brindisi while Europe's king and queen refused to leave London during the Blitz. The act solidified his position as the traitorous king in the eyes of the Italian people. With all the controversy surrounding the monarchy, Victor Emmanuel III abdicated in 1946 in favor of his son Umberto II. 👑
Umberto II lacked the charm and tact of his father, making him a figure of ridicule among the public. Rumors of his sexuality and involvement with prominent figures from the arts and politics further tarnished his image. 🌈
A lingering legacy:
As the years passed, Umberto II lived in exile in Portugal, witnessing the fall of Mussolini and the continued decline of the House of Savoy. The descendants of the House of Savoy remain a source of fascination for the European media, with their tales of scandal and controversy. 🤭
Today, we can only wonder what life would have been like if Italy had continued her royal voyage. The future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear, you won't catch an Italian pining for the dimly lit days of the monarchy. Instead, they'll celebrate the brighter, more equitable future brought about by the Festa della Repubblica. 🇮🇹💛
