In the world of superheroes, it seems the government is taking a closer look, as evidenced by a news billboard that hints at regulation. This is just one of the intriguing elements in the recently released trailer for James Gunn's upcoming Superman film.

The trailer, unveiled on July 11, offers a glimpse into a story that centres around Clark Kent/Superman intervening in an international conflict. The nation of Boravia is attempting to invade Jarhanpur, and Superman steps in to prevent the catastrophe.

The film starts with a major setback for Superman. He is defeated for the first time by the "Hammer of Boravia" and retreats to his Fortress of Solitude in Antarctica. There, with the help of solar radiation and a recorded message from his Kryptonian birth parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, he recovers. However, the message turns out to be incomplete, and when restored later, it reveals a shocking directive for Superman to conquer Earth and rebuild the Kryptonian race by taking many wives.

Back in Metropolis, Superman faces the Hammer once more, but this time, he is secretly up against Ultraman, a metahuman working for billionaire Lex Luthor. Luthor unleashes a kaiju on Metropolis as a diversion while he infiltrates Superman's fortress to access Kryptonian secrets.

Superman rallies a team of heroes called the "Justice Gang," comprising Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl, to fight the kaiju. Although Superman wants to capture it alive, Mister Terrific makes the decision to kill the creature.

The relationship between Superman and reporter Lois Lane is a significant theme in the film. Lois challenges Superman on the moral and legal consequences of his actions as a powerful metahuman, leading to significant character development around their relationship.

The film blends epic action with themes of trust, power, and identity, laying a foundation for the new DC Universe James Gunn is creating. This story does not begin as an origin tale; Superman has already been active for three years. The film draws inspiration from various iconic Superman comics like "Kingdom Come," "Superman: For All Seasons," and "All-Star Superman," presenting a complex and nuanced superhero within a vibrant DC world.

The trailer features several key characters. Maxwell Lord is in the film, potentially playing a role in the re-establishment of the Justice League. Guy Gardner uses his Green Lantern ring to swat away soldiers. Hawkgirl is seen smashing and flying someone out of a college campus. The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría, plays a significant role in the trailer and has the ability to shapeshift and create anything she desires.

The trailer also includes some intriguing scenes. Superman saves a woman from being stomped by a giant kaiju. Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific are seen together, possibly indicating an early iteration of the Justice League. Superman falls from the sky and crashes into the ground, but it's unclear whether this is due to a battle or a giant kaiju. The trailer ends with a close-up of Lois asking Superman if he has a dog, leading to a scene with Krypto in Clark's old bedroom in Smallville.

The film also presents some mysteries. A spaceship lands on the street in Metropolis, but it's unclear whose ship it is and when that takes place in the movie. The trailer shows several shots of Superman's helper robots being destroyed by the Engineer, and Krypto joining in the destruction. Metamorph has a hand turned into Kryptonite, implying someone knows Superman's weakness.

In the midst of all this action, there's a poignant moment. Ma Kent says she cleaned Clark's boots, indicating he is still at home in Smallville. The trailer also shows Superman and Lex Luthor sharing a tense scene in Lex's office. Lex's girlfriend Eve Teschmacher is introduced, taking a selfie as Superman fights. Superman is shot by a house that shoots lasers, with the location and shooter unknown.

As the trailer concludes, Superman rises from a massive debris field, suggesting a hopeful moment. With James Gunn at the helm, this new Superman movie promises to be an exciting addition to the DC Universe.
