2024 - In an unexpected turn of events, the Union emerged victorious in the European election across Germany with a dominating 30.0% share. Hot on their heels, the right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) took the second spot with 15.9% of the votes, outperforming the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who received 13.9%. Despite their strong showing, the environmentalist Greens and the Free Democrats (FDP) still managed to secure 11.9% and 5.2% respectively. In the eastern German federal states, the AfD even topped the charts. The newly formed left-wing alliance, Sahra Wagenknecht's Alliance (BSW), made an impressive debut by bagging 6.2% of the votes!

2000 - The curtains came down on a deeply immersive experience for John, a resident of Potsdam, when he emerged as the very first winner of the German adaptation of RTL-II's popular show "Big Brother." In exchange for 100 days under constant camera surveillance in a living container, he won a grand prize of 250,000 marks (127,823 euros)!

1995 - A fateful letter bomb, addressed to the television host Arabella Kiesbauer, exploded in the Munich office of ProSeven. The 27-year-old daughter of a German actress and a Ghanaian engineer had already been a target of racial hate.

1950 - Ten German broadcasting institutions came together to form the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Germany (ARD).

1815 - With the signing of the Final Act of the Congress of Vienna, the reorganization of Europe after the fall of Napoleon began.

1978 - Miroslav Klose, a legendary German footballer who served as the national team's striker from 2001-2014, bagged the World Cup in 2014.
