One of Nigel's key strategies involves paring down his gear. By reducing the use of muslin cloth, rope, and opting for a lighter-weight rain jacket, he estimates he can save around 4kg. Additionally, he suggests taking a smaller knife, sharing binoculars with hunting mates, and considering sharing a rifle to lighten the load.

Essential items for a hunt include a waterproof jacket, torch, Personal Locater Beacon (PLB), first aid kit, map, emergency shelter, food and water, and warmer layered clothes.
Heavier items should be packed lower to help maintain balance during the hunt. Reducing pack weight can significantly decrease the risk of injuries during hunting trips, as approximately 15% of all Big Game Hunting injuries are the result of carrying a heavy load.
Adam also advises paying attention during the upcoming Roar season and not forgetting essential items. He emphasises the importance of refining non-essential items by asking questions like "Do I need a book?" or "Do I need a separate camera?"
Nigel, who carried a 65L pack weighing approximately 32kg, including a deer and his hunting mate's pig, is now reconsidering taking the firearms suppressor for future hunts. He acknowledges that his recent trip has shown him the importance of reducing pack weight for a safer and more enjoyable hunting experience.
