Three of the accused have been in custody since their arrest at the scene, while one has been released pending trial.
During the attack, an SPD local politician and her husband were targeted. Witness Carolyn Macmillan, the SPD faction leader in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district assembly, testified that the assailants first stole their red caps and then brutally assaulted her husband, knocking him to the ground. In her statement, she recounted her extreme shock and fear for her husband's life. She too was subsequently pushed to the ground when she attempted to call the police for help.
The husband, aged 50, recalled the attack as "sudden and unprovoked." He was attacked without prior communication and left vulnerable on the ground, hearing kicks from combat boots. Despite the violence, the backpack and bag he wore managed to act as makeshift protective shields, sparing him from potentially greater injuries. He ultimately sustained bruises and painful contusions, as described in the indictment.
Investigations suggest that the men formed a group of 8-10 individuals, planning to participate in a demonstration by the right-wing spectrum. Authorities believe these defendants belong to a violent youth scene that adopts a right-wing extremist ideology. They are said to have come together through their openly displayed extremist beliefs and committed to resorting to violence against politically diverse individuals whenever the opportunity arose.
The attorney representing the defendant who admitted guilt revealed that his client had been prepared to employ violence during the incident. He discarded caps, pushed, struck, and verbally abused the victims, recognizing them as politically active individuals. Upon reflection in custody, he acknowledged his mistakes and vowed to pursue a new political path, committing to abstain from violence moving forward.
According to the indictment, the defendants encountered the SPD campaigners by chance in the Lichterfelde district. The campaigners were initially harassed and then violently assaulted by their attackers, who wore reinforced combat boots with nails embedded in their soles, as per the indictment. During the attack, the arriving police officers were also confronted and sustained injuries, with one officer suffering a broken middle hand and another receiving cuts from a shattered window.
Miss Macmillan, the local politician, openly shared that the attack had made her more vigilant, but her resolve remains steadfast: "It's crucial to keep showing support for democratic parties." The trial resumes on May 28.
