Unpredictable performances night after night: award-winning jazz guitarist Pete Roth discusses his dynamic trio that embraces spontaneity, introducing a unique sense of freedom in improvisational music.
In the world of contemporary fusion, the Pete Roth Trio stands out as a unique ensemble that values the sonic space each member has to create in the moment. Led by German-born, UK-based guitar instructor, Pete Roth, the band is currently on tour across Europe, the UK, and Japan.
Pete Roth, known for his daring approach to contemporary fusion, uses a variety of effects to shape his sound. His guitar is plugged into a Fender Deluxe and a Dr Z EZG-50, running in stereo. He relies on a Boss CE-2 for chorus, a Boss DD-7 for digital delay, TC Electronic reverb and looper, a first generation Fulltone Full-Drive, an Xotic RC Booster as always-on effects, and a Boss SY-1 for interesting effects, providing sounds like bells, synths, and organs. His main guitar is an Epiphone Sheraton.
The band's rhythm section is composed of Bill Bruford, a former member of King Crimson, on drums, and Mike Pratt on bass. Bruford's wealth of knowledge has opened creative doors for Pete Roth, significantly influencing his playing style. The current bassist of the band, Mike Pratt, brings his own unique touch to the group's sound.
The Pete Roth Trio's music is a fusion of styles, drawing inspiration from funk, prog rock, traditional jazz, hard rock, and blues. While they are often categorised as a new jazz group, Pete Roth describes their music as "near-jazz" rather than proper jazz. The band's setlist includes original compositions like Looking Forward To Looking Back and Dancing With Grace, as well as daring interpretations of works by John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Antonín Dvořák.
The band formed when Pete Roth and Bill Bruford jammed together, and their chemistry is palpable in their performances. The Pete Roth Trio has been performing in the UK, Europe, and Japan, and their Sep/Oct tour promises to be an exciting chapter in their musical journey.
