A Fresh Take: Deniz Undav's Perspective on Judging Players and Fashion
Unnerves Undav with Leroy's attire: "Boxer wear chosen by Leroy bothers Undav..."
In Herzogenaurach - National player Deniz Undav is disappointed with the judgement and evaluation of football players based on superficial aspects like fancy clothing or lavish accessories. Even slight oddities often lead to criticism when pitch performance is lacking.
During a recent DFB press conference, Undav addressed queries regarding his teammate Leroy Sané's stylish outfits. In contrast, Undav himself arrived at the DFB premises with a trash bag and later a plastic bag. Was this a statement of protest? "Absolutely not," Undav replied.
"I simply intended to transport my football shoes," he explained. "I genuinely don't care about such trivialities," he continued, while advocating for Sané and other teammates who express themselves through fashion and appearance. "Everyone should be free to wear what they want. It's not anyone's concern to pass judgement on matters irrelevant to them," Undav argued.
Reminiscing about online discussions debating Sané's expensive belongings, Undav commented, "That's his business. And if he shows up in just his boxers, he should be allowed to. We shouldn't judge whether it's stylish or not. That's his call." Undav added, "I dress how I wish."
Undav himself has encountered this scrutiny during periods of weaker performances. His preferences, such as döner or energy drinks, were suddenly criticized. "Of course, I've noticed that," he admitted. Initially, it bothered him a great deal. "Previously, everything was fine, top-notch, and I was one of us. And suddenly, I wasn't. I didn't understand that," he confessed in Herzogenaurach.
He shared his concerns with seasoned teammates like captain Joshua Kimmich, which helped him regain his original self and disregard external criticism.
Undav's form saw a significant improvement during the final sprint of last season, culminating in VfB Stuttgart's DFB Cup victory. Now, the seasoned striker hopes to secure his sixth appearance after several matchless appearances against France. "Of course, it's frustrating when I don't play. However, it's about the team. Some day, I might be rewarded - and then I'll have to deliver. I've already demonstrated that I can score. Naturally, I'm waiting for my opportunity. Maybe it will come in my home game in Stuttgart."
