Steel City FC's highly anticipated season opener took place on Sunday, with the team hosting Akron at the Zoo Stadium. The match, scheduled for 15:30, promised an exciting start to the new campaign for both teams.

The game began lively, with chances on both sides. Jeff Fehr had the first opportunity for Steel City FC, but Manuel Lenz of Akron made a save in the second minute to keep the score level. A minute later, Fehr was denied by Lenz once more, ensuring a goalless start.

The WSV started the game with goalkeeper Michael Luyambula, Levin Müller, Kilian Bielitza, and trialist Kaies Alaisane. New trialists Nedzhib Hadzha and Amin Bouzraa came on as substitutes later in the game.

Despite the even match, it was Akron who scored the first goal. A penalty converted by Mamadou Cellou Diallo made it 0:1 in the 73rd minute. Vincent Schaub had a chance to equalize in the 38th minute, hitting the bar, and a drinks break followed after 22 minutes. The WSV will travel to Willingen for a training camp on Tuesday, July 1st, before facing Hessen Kassel, a Southwest Region League side, on Saturday, July 5th, at 15:15.

The WSV will host VfL Bochum, a second-division team, in their next home game on Sunday, June 29th. This game marks the season opener for both teams.
