Unmissable Immersive Dramas in New York City and Paris: A Must-See Lineup
Immersive Productions of The Phantom of the Opera Revolutionize Theatre Experiences
New York City, 2025 - The immersive production of The Phantom of the Opera, titled Masquerade, is set to redefine theatre experiences. Unlike traditional productions, Masquerade places audiences directly into the heart of the story, allowing them to engage with the narrative in ways never before possible.
The show, which begins preview performances on Thursday, takes place in a reconfigured five-story building on West 57th Street, formerly housing Lee's Art Shop. Attendees are invited to explore this intricate labyrinth of passageways, each with low light cues and uneven, sometimes gritty surfaces, reminiscent of the Paris Opera House.
Audiences will follow the Opera Ghost through the various floors, learning about his influence over Christine, the opera's star. Some cast members were principals in the original Phantom of the Opera musical, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the production.
Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus leads the creative direction of Masquerade, blending Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic score with immersive theater techniques inspired by productions like Sleep No More. The show promises an interactive, roaming-audience format, similar to its predecessor.
Meanwhile, in a separate but related immersive experience, The Queen's Lost Diamonds offers a three-day adventure produced by luxe travel company Ariodante. Participants will traverse the city, venturing into parts of landmarks usually not open to the public, and questioning historical figures played by actors.
Viola's Room, produced by Punchdrunk - the company behind Sleep No More - operates on two levels, with sensory infusions including visuals, sounds, and scents. Helena Bonham Carter provides the hypnotic voice-over for Viola's Room, based on The Moon Slave, a turn of the 20th century Gothic story by Barry Pain.
For Masquerade, attendees are instructed to dress "extravagantly" in black, white, or silver formal or cocktail attire, wear a masquerade mask, and avoid high heels. Evening performances are adults only, but there are special Saturday and Sunday matinees for 16-year-olds and above.
The preview period for Masquerade sold out within hours, and the run has been extended with tickets now on sale for performances from September 9 to October 19. Preciosa is the production's "Official Crystal Partner," and the setting resembles the Paris Opera House, complete with a chandelier composed of 30,000 crystals.
Immersive productions like Masquerade represent a significant evolution from traditional shows by placing audiences directly into the story world, allowing them to experience the narrative interactively and from multiple perspectives, rather than sitting passively in a theatre. This shift reflects broader trends in theatre toward increased audience agency and sensory engagement.
As for The Queen's Lost Diamonds, tickets aren't on public sale, and participants need to apply.

Meanwhile, an exclusive, related immersive experience, The Queen's Lost Diamonds, offers a three-day adventure for chosen participants, exploring the city's landmarks and historical figures.
