Criminal Network Dismantled in Spain for Illegally Selling Tainted Meat

Madrid - Spanish authorities have dismantled a criminal network accused of selling meat from sick and malnourished sheep and goats without proper health controls in at least nine Asian restaurants and to private households online, according to the Guardia Civil. The force made five arrests, while investigations continue against twelve other individuals.

In a statement, the Guardia Civil revealed that the region of Madrid was particularly affected by the illegal operations. Four restaurants were temporarily closed by the authorities.

During a press conference, a spokesman for the Guardia Civil detailed the horrifying conditions discovered during searches of several illegal slaughterhouses. More than 200 sick and dying animals were found in San Fernando de Henares east of the capital, living amidst filth, severed animal heads, and rats. Over 350 severely malnourished, incurably ill, or deformed animals were euthanized due to their poor health.

In addition to the sanctioned premises in San Fernando, the environmental department of the Guardia Civil also searched unregistered livestock farms and slaughterhouses, as well as industrial facilities in the provinces of Ávila, Toledo, and Madrid. The arrested individuals face charges of animal cruelty, public health offenses, document forgery, membership of a criminal organization, and money laundering.

Spain has upheld its reputation as free from sheep pox and goat pox, with restrictions on imports from countries like Bulgaria due to concerns over animal health regulations in import sources. The ongoing investigation underscores the importance of maintaining stringent controls against unauthorized meat trafficking to ensure both domestic and international food safety.
