Background

The Black Sea region has been a battlefield in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Recent military actions have included drone strikes and air defenses on both sides. In a notable incident, Ukrainian forces successfully took down a Russian Su-30 fighter jet using a sea drone in the Black Sea on May 2. Russia, in response, claimed to have shot down 170 Ukrainian drones and several missiles overnight in early May[1].

Diplomatic efforts include a preliminary truce regarding the Black Sea and energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine, aimed at reducing hostilities and easing the humanitarian crisis[4]. However, concerns over the truce's enforcement abound, as both sides have violated past agreements[4]. The broader conflict continues, with ongoing military actions on land and the involvement of international monitors to ensure compliance with any agreements[1][3].
