Russia has launched another large-scale aerial assault against Ukraine, using swarms of drones and missiles throughout the night of May 24 to 25. According to the Ukrainian air force, this attack marks the most extensive combined drone and missile strike since the war started.
The Russian army targeted various regions across Ukraine, with cities such as Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and more experiencing multiple explosions. Reports indicate that the attacks came from different directions, with hundreds of drones and numerous missiles striking various locations. The Ukrainian air force used air defense systems extensively to respond, but there have been no official reports of significant casualties or damage by early morning.
The strategic aviation of the Russian army allegedly used cruise missiles in the attack, which were launched from several regions in Russia and the Black Sea. The Ukraine air force managed to shoot down 45 cruise missiles and 139 drones during the attack. Additionally, two Kh-59/69 missiles went missing in action, while 127 drones were lost.
The drones reportedly attacked the port city of Odessa and the major city of Kharkiv. Series of explosions were heard in Kharkiv, according to the regional military administrator Oleh Synyehubov. Unlike previous rocket and drone attacks, no casualties or severe damage have been reported as of yet.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine in recent days, with the nights of Saturday and Sunday seeing at least twelve people killed and nearly 80 injured. In response, Ukraine flew drones towards Moscow on Sunday. Consequently, some airports in the Russian capital had to temporarily halt take-offs and landings as a result.
Ukrainian officials have urged Western partners to increase sanctions on Russia in response to these attacks, arguing that such actions are deliberate strikes on civilian areas. President Zelensky is calling for stronger sanctions against Russia and has appealed to international partners to increase pressure on Moscow's leadership.
As the conflict continues, both sides are expected to escalate their efforts in an attempt to gain the upper hand. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
