Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) intrudes into Romanian airspace during Russian assault on bordering Ukraine.
In a series of events, multiple European countries have found themselves on high alert as Russian drones have violated their airspace.
The latest incident occurred in Romania, where the defense ministry reported a Russian drone infiltrated its airspace during attacks on Ukraine. This follows a string of similar incidents in the past week, with Poland reporting the shooting down of at least three Russian drones on Wednesday.
The European Union's Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned these incursions, labelling them as "yet another unacceptable breach of an EU member state's sovereignty." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated these sentiments, stating that the incident was no accident but an obvious expansion of the war by Russia.
The drone that was shot down over Romania was tracked by two F-16 fighter jets about 20km southwest of Chilia Veche before disappearing from radar. Several NATO countries, including Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and others, have been involved in shooting down Russian drones over or near Poland.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic announced it is sending a special operations helicopter unit to Poland, consisting of three Mi-171S aircraft equipped for combat and troop transport. This move, according to Czech Defence Minister Jana Cernochova, reinforces NATO's eastern flank.
Belarus, a close ally of Russia, claimed the Polish incident was caused by navigation system failures. However, these claims have been met with scepticism by the involved nations.
Amidst these tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump stated earlier this week that he is prepared to impose stricter sanctions on Moscow. However, it's important to note that Trump's statement about sanctions on Russia is not directly related to the incidents in Poland and Romania.
In response to these events, Volodymyr Zelenskyy argued that Russia's military "knows exactly where their drones are headed." Trump mentioned that he would only impose these sanctions if NATO allies agreed to curb imports of Russian oil.
Despite these developments, Moscow has yet to comment on the incidents in Poland and Romania. The silence from Russia's defense ministry has only heightened the concerns of the involved nations.
This article does not provide any new information about the incident in Romania regarding the Russian drone violation. It serves to highlight the escalating tensions between Russia and its neighbouring nations, and the measures being taken to defend against these incursions.
