Illegal crossings detected at the German-Danish border: 154 incidents reported - Unlawful Crossings at the German-Danish Border: 154 Cases Detected

Hey there! Here's the lowdown on those pesky unauthorized entries happening at the German-Danish border.

Over a span of five months, the German Federal Police uncovered a whopping 154 illegal crossings at the German-Danish border. Out of these, 128 undocumented individuals were sent packing and 6 shrewd smugglers were nabbed. The authorities also executive 41 arrest warrants, and one sneaky character from the extremist crew was caught slipping through.

Land border patrols on high alert

Typically, border checks aren't a thing in the Schengen zone. However, they can be reported to the European Commission and temporarily enforced – say, to annoy smugglers and curb illegal migration.

Back in mid-September, the German Federal Police, on the orders of Nancy Faeser, the Federal Minister of the Interior, started patrolling the borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Since mid-October 2023, the German-Polish, Czech Republic, and Swiss borders have been under watch, while the German-Austrian border has been under surveillance since Fall 2015. Don't get too comfortable at those border sections – everyone's a potential candidate for a check-up.

Over 25,000 undocumented entries nationwide

Up until March 2nd, the Federal Police reported a grand total of 25,826 unauthorized entries at all of Germany's frontiers. Out of these, 16,403 individuals were sent on their merry way at the border or promptly escorted off the property post-illegal border dash. 930 people were slapped with a ban on setting foot in Germany, and 613 smugglers were arrested provisional-style. The Federal Police also managed to execute 4,066 outstanding arrest warrants, and 436 Extremist and Islamist suspects were spotted.

The number of unauthorized entries is on the decline

The overall numbers of unauthorized entries are taking a nosedive: According to preliminary numbers, 9,944 unauthorized entries were reported in the first two months of 2024. Compared to the same period in 2023, that's a significant dip from 12,904. In January and February 2023, the count sat at 12,955 unauthorized entries. The Federal Police expects the total number of unauthorized entries in 2024 to amount to 83,572 – a drop compared to 2023's tally of 127,549.
