Montana Bar Shooting: Manhunt Underway for Armed and Dangerous Suspect

A manhunt is underway in the town of Anaconda, Montana, after a shooting incident at The Owl Bar on Friday morning. The suspect, 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown, is described as an armed and dangerous individual who allegedly fatally shot four people inside the bar before fleeing the scene.

Anaconda, a town of about 9,000 people founded by copper barons and located about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula, was left in shock following the incident. Barbie Nelson, owner of the Firefly Café, mentioned that guns are common in Montana, but the town being locked down has rattled its residents.

The victims of the shooting were identified as the bartender and three patrons, according to bar owner David Gwerder. Authorities confirmed that four people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Michael Paul Brown, a military veteran who served in the U.S. Army and the Montana National Guard, is believed to be the suspect in the shooting. Brown, who lived next door to The Owl Bar, served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and was a member of the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009. He was deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005.

The shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Brown is believed to have abandoned his initial white pickup truck and stolen another vehicle with camping gear, shoes, and clothes inside. This has led officials to believe he might now be clothed.

Authorities are conducting a manhunt, with the search extending into the wilderness area where Brown grew up. The Montana Attorney General has described Brown as an unstable individual who committed the shootings in cold blood with no apparent reason. Brown left military service in the rank of sergeant.

Business owners in Anaconda locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers due to the shooting. Sage Huot, owner of Caterpillars to Butterflies Childcare, kept the children inside all day after receiving a call about the violence. The smelter stack in Anaconda, though no longer operational, looms over the valley.

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. Brown was last seen in the Stump Town area, just west of Anaconda. His home was cleared by a SWAT team, but as of now, Brown remains at large.

The community of Anaconda is urged to remain vigilant and to report any sightings of Brown to the authorities. The safety and wellbeing of the town's residents are the top priority during this difficult time.
