Unjustified Attack on Public Territories Ignored Public's Wish in America
No-Holds-Barred Take:
Folks, Defenders of Wildlife, a group that's been saving critters for over 75 years, ain't shy about calling a spade a spade. And they've labeled Senator Mike Lee's latest power play to peddle our country's public lands as nothing less than a raw betrayal of the people's will. This move follows his previous attempt, which turned into a real political firestorm and got shot down by the Senate's brainiac, the parliamentarian.
Vera Smith, the director of the national forests and public lands program at Defenders of Wildlife, spilled the beans when she said, "Senator Lee can keep on proposing this crap, but it won't change the fact that the American people are firm in their opposition to selling our public lands." The wildlife she's talking about? You know, the things like pronghorn and sage-grouse that need those lands to survive. Peddling 'em off to fund some rich dude's wild parties? Unacceptable.
Curious, what's new in this latest proposal of Lee's? Well, he's suggestin' we sell off 600,000 to 1.2 million acres of public lands managed by the BLM. The twist? He wants 'em sold within five miles of undefined population centers. That means treasured spots for local communities' outdoor recreation, and areas that bolster those communities' outdoor recreation economy, are at risk. On top of that, it opens up lands near National Parks and crucial habitats for endangered species to development for luxury real estate.
If you wanna know more about Defenders of Wildlife and their valiant efforts to protect our wildlife and public lands, check out their website or give them a follow on X @Defenders. Keep in mind, this is just my take on the situation; Defenders of Wildlife hasn't made an official statement yet specifically on Senator Lee's proposal. But with their history of protecting wildlife habitats and public lands, it's safe to say they wouldn't take kindly to this scheme.
