University Park Set to Welcome Mahatma Gandhi's Grandson for Commemoration of His 150th Birth Anniversary

Renowned Indian scholar, historian, author, and peacebuilder Rajmohan Gandhi is set to share his insights on peace efforts, journalism, and societal development at two upcoming symposiums in Kansas City, Missouri, and Overland Park, Kansas.

On August 26, 2019, at 7 p.m., a program titled "Gandhi: The First Peace Journalist" will take place at Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on Park University's Parkville Campus. The event will feature Rajmohan Gandhi, Abhijit Mazumdar, Ph.D., Cynthia Lukas, and will be moderated by Steven Youngblood. The symposium is co-sponsored by the International Relations Council. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

The program will examine Mahatma Gandhi as a journalist and his promotion of journalism as a tool for societal development and peace. Rajmohan Gandhi, who is notably the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has authored several important biographies and historical works, including a comprehensive biography of Mahatma Gandhi titled "Mohandas: A True Story of a Man, His People, and an Empire," published by Penguin in 2006.

In addition to his work in journalism and writing, Rajmohan Gandhi has been deeply involved in promoting nonviolence and communal harmony, reflecting the values of his grandfather. His peace efforts extend to engagement with issues of conflict resolution and interfaith dialogue in India, especially between Hindus and Muslims.

Rajmohan Gandhi's academic influence stems from both his written works and participation in educational initiatives on peace and conflict. He is a respected historian and academic with a focus on Indian history, political science, and peace studies. His scholarly output has contributed to a greater understanding of India’s political and social fabric, as well as the global implications of nonviolent resistance.

On August 27, 2019, a symposium titled "The Status of Peacebuilding Between India and Pakistan" will take place at 7 p.m. in Hudson Auditorium on Johnson County Community College's campus in Overland Park, Kan. A reception will precede the symposium on August 27, starting at 6:30 p.m. Rajmohan Gandhi will present at the symposium.

Rajmohan Gandhi has been associated with Initiatives of Change (formerly known as Moral Rearmament) since 1956. He served as president of Initiatives of Change International in 2009 and 2010 and played a leading role in establishing Asia Plateau, a 68-acre center of Initiatives of Change in the mountains of western India, in the 1960s and early 1970s. He also led the Indian delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1990.

Rajmohan Gandhi's commitment to peacebuilding and his scholarly contributions make him an eminent figure in the fields of peace studies, journalism, and Indian history. His work continues to inspire and inform discussions on nonviolence, conflict resolution, and societal development.
