University district of Munich no longer prohibits the sale of beer
In a move that balances the interests of both local businesses and residents, Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) has announced that beer sales after 22:00 will be permitted again at kiosks in Munich's university district (Univiertel) on a trial basis. This decision comes following a series of complaints about nighttime noise, litter, and "remnants" of revellers in the area[1].
The suspension of the beer sales ban allows kiosk operators to resume their traditional late-night beer sales, a significant boost for their business. However, Mayor Krause has issued a strong warning to prevent disorderly celebrations associated with late-night alcohol sales[1].
The ban on beer sales after 10 p.m. had been enforced to reduce disturbances affecting residents. The city aims to balance ensuring public order and supporting local businesses by closely monitoring the situation under the new arrangement[1].
Young people, particularly those affected by poverty, find affordable alternatives like kiosks important as they cannot afford bars and pubs. Krause has emphasized the importance of respecting residents' interests in the university district while maintaining spaces for young people[1].
Kiosk operators reported existential fears due to the beer sales ban. The Second Mayor of Munich, Dominik Krause, has asked the Building Authority to increase street cleaning in the affected streets to address concerns about litter[1].
The Circuit Administration Office (KVR) clarified that it had never issued a ban on the sale of chips. The KVR holds kiosk operators accountable for long-term responsibility and concrete improvements[1].
According to the Bavarian Closing Hours Act, the closing time for retail is after 20:00, and there is no legal basis for kiosks to sell a comprehensive range of goods beyond 20:00. From next Friday, bottle beer can again be bought at the five affected kiosks after 22:00[1].
Mayor Krause has urged kiosk operators to ensure peace, even beyond the immediate vicinity of their kiosks. If good coexistence is not possible and nightly disturbances continue, the city will reintroduce the beer sales ban for kiosks after 22:00[1].
In summary: - Beer sales after 22:00 at university district kiosks are permitted again on a trial basis. - Mayor Krause warns of consequences if public order problems arise. - This change helps kiosk operators financially but remains sensitive to residents' peace.
