Empowering the Entrepreneurial Spirit: Four Universities Team Up to Boost Startup Ecosystem in the Rhine-Main Region
- Universities Collaborate on Launching Thousands of New Businesses Together
Hey there! Wanna know about the exciting new alliance between some fave universities in the Rhine-Main area? It's all about fostering a thriving startup scene!
Goethe University Frankfurt, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Technical University Darmstadt, and Futury - a team's been formed, and the goal is clear as day: spur on 1,000 new startups by 2030. What's more, they're aiming to make one percent of the total students at these universities budding entrepreneurs.
They've dubbed this ambitious project the "Future Factory." It's a place where academic research and entrepreneurial practice meet, strengthening the entrepreneurial spirit among students and researchers alike.
Within this partnership, the Frankfurt School will transfer a significant 45% of its Futury GmbH shares to the other three Rhine-Main universities. Each university will then hold 15% of the shares.
Georg Krausch, president of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, explained the importance of teaming up, saying that startups don't arise in isolation. The Future Factory, he believes, will bring together universities, businesses, and entrepreneurs on a platform to accelerate the market launch of future technologies.
Enrico Schleiff, president of Goethe University Frankfurt, agrees, stating that the region between Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and Mainz has vast potential to become a major innovation hub, thanks to its concentration of scientific institutions and research-driven companies.
Startups can expect to reap benefits from Futury's expertise - think direct access to funding, industry connections, and coaching from industry insiders. Since 2015, over 120 startups have reportedly received support from Futury. Around 100 firms have collaborated with the innovation platform, with customers like Deutsche Bank and Procter & Gamble.
Though Hesse hasn't yet made a significant impact on the national startup scene, there have been successes in the research-intensive environment. According to figures from the start-up association, Darmstadt ranks among the leading cities in Germany for start-ups per 100,000 inhabitants.
The alliance's strategy includes structured programs that cater to every stage of startup development, participation in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action's "Startup Factories" competition, and a strong network of over 100 leading industry partners.
