The Young Choir Beckhausen, a vibrant ensemble of 65 members aged between 20 and 70, played a significant supporting role in the grand opening ceremony of the Universiade 2025. The event, which kicked off on Wednesday evening in the Duisburg MSV-Arena, is hosting over 8,500 athletes from around the world in a celebration of international sporting spirit.

The choir, based in Gelsenkirchen, was invited to participate in the performance two months ago by the director of the event. They rehearsed meticulously, with an initial organizational rehearsal on Monday and a general rehearsal on Tuesday, to ensure a flawless performance.

During the ceremony, the choir performed three times, singing the "Steiger Song", the German national anthem, and the impressive "Gaudeamus igitur". The latter was sung by ten choirs on the opposite side of the main stage, creating an impressive and harmonious scene. The WDR Symphony Orchestra, seated behind the choir, added an orchestral touch to the performance.

To synchronize with the orchestra, the choir suggested having a conductor stand in front of them, a proposal that was agreed upon by the organisers. The performance was broadcast live on WDR television, and the choir's director, Wolfgang Wilger, described it as an "unforgettable experience".

The Universiade 2025 will continue until July 27 in five Ruhr cities, including Zollverein in Essen-Katernberg, where some competitions will be held. For updates and news on the event, subscribers to the Gelsenkirchen Newsletter can find detailed information, including the Advertising Agreement.
