Unitedfront against racism and celebration of diversity: multi-faceted sports and culture event MATIS

The African Students' Association (ASV) e.V., in cooperation with the city of Marburg, is organising the "Marburg Day of Integration through Sports" (MATIS) event on Saturday, September 20. This year's theme, "10 Years MATIS, 10 Years Sports Against Racism and For Diversity", promises a day filled with sports, culture, and unity.

The sports event, taking place at the Marburg Georg-Gaßmann Stadium from 9 am to 4:30 pm, will feature football and volleyball tournaments. Each team participating in the tournaments must have at least two nationalities represented, fostering an integrative approach and promoting intercultural exchange.

Volleyball teams can still register for the tournament with a registration fee of 35 euros. During the volleyball tournament, teams will receive water, soft drinks, sandwiches, and fruit to keep their energy levels high.

The MATIS event is scheduled to last from 9 am to 8 pm, with the Cultural Night beginning at 8 pm. The Cultural Night will be a celebration of African culture, featuring live music from African sounds, a traditional and modern African fashion show, and an international buffet.

Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies, patron of MATIS, emphasises the importance of sports connecting people across borders and MATIS as a strong sign against racism and for diversity. The focus of the tournaments is on the joy of movement, sportsmanship, and the togetherness of people from different nationalities.

Fairness awards will be given out this year to emphasise the importance of respectful interaction. The MATIS Cultural Night will continue at the St. Martin-Haus, Waidmannsweg 11, from 8 pm.

The event is open to the public, and admission to the Cultural Night is free. To stay updated on all important news from the town hall and city life, subscribe to the City of Marburg newsletter.
