Rock-Solid U.S. Security for Ukraine: What Zelensky Wants

United States urged to provide robust security assurances akin to Israel's, according to Zelensky

In the heat of ongoing skirmishes with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky has his sights set on beefed-up security guarantees from the U.S. - guarantees as resolute as those enjoyed by Israel.

According to reports, Zelensky emphasized this point during a recent meeting, stating, "There's a question I'm discussing... regarding security guarantees from the United States. We very much want them to be as strong, at least, as Israel's."

Zelensky stopped short of explicitly requesting Ukraine's inclusion in NATO, but instead opted for similar protections without formal membership. He also longs for Patriot air defense systems, recognition of which would serve as a significant step in enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian attacks.

Meanwhile, Ukraine looks to Europe for military support as well, expecting a contingent from European partners. However, the possible deployment of this contingent hinges on U.S. support, which doesn't necessarily imply a physical presence on Ukrainian soil. Rather, it may manifest in the form of intelligence cooperation, cybersecurity enhancement, or even the provision of air defense systems.

These security guarantees are crucial not only in the realm of air defense, but also on land and at sea. They are meant to bolster Ukraine's defenses, shielding it from ongoing threats emanating from Russia.

In contrast, Israeli-U.S. relations boast a long history of military support and cooperation, culminating in a formal agreement that assures Israel's qualitative military edge. Unfortunately, Ukraine has yet to establish such a comprehensive partnership.

U.S. aid for Ukraine has merited attention in recent history, with Washington reportedly considering recognition of Russia's control over Ukrainian Crimea and easing sanctions on Moscow. However, the stance has shifted as the talks progressed, with President Zelensky asserting that the U.S. has since presented its strategy for Ukrainian territories during London talks.

In an effort to put an end to the war, Ukraine has proposed stripping Russia of international recognition of its sovereignty over Crimea and other occupied territories. This ambitious negotiating document, yet to be finalized, represents Ukraine's commitment to securing its territorial integrity and autonomy.
