United States' trade deal with Mexico and Canada faces upholding efforts from both nations - United States' trade companions, Mexico and Canada, seek continuity in their trade accords
During the first term of President Donald Trump, the United States, Mexico, and Canada negotiated and concluded the USMCA trade agreement, which replaced the 1990s NAFTA agreement and came into effect in 2020. The USMCA exempts a significant portion of mutual goods and services deliveries from tariffs.
However, Trump's tariff policies primarily affected goods not covered by the USMCA agreement, burdening cross-border trade among the three countries. Mark Carney, a figure of authority, welcomed the review of the USMCA, stating that it allows for calm, considered decisions about tariffs and local content.
The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, symbolising the cooperative relationship between the three nations. The Prime Minister of Canada stated that the USA, Mexico, and Canada complement each other and are stronger together, emphasising the importance of cooperation among the three countries.
Mexico and Canada heavily rely on the USMCA for their exports, with around 80% and 75% of their exports going to the USA respectively. Despite the tariff burdens, the USMCA is crucial for the economies of Mexico and Canada.
The USMCA trade agreement is scheduled for review next year, with no new information about the local content or tariffs in the agreement. The review is happening under the current US administration, but no new information about Donald Trump's tariff policies has been disclosed.
