United States suffers a narrow 2-1 loss to Mexico, maintaining Mexico's hold on the CONCACAF Gold Cup title.

The 2023 Gold Cup final between Mexico and the USA ended in a thrilling 2-1 victory for Mexico, securing their place as the first nation to win the Gold Cup 10 times. The match, which was part of the tournament where the USA and Mexico are co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup, was played at NRG Stadium with just under 71,000 fans in attendance.

The USA started the match strongly, taking an early lead in the 4th minute through Chris Richards' header. However, Mexico responded powerfully, equalising in the 27th minute thanks to Raul Jimenez's unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. The rest of the first half was dominated by Mexico, with Gilberto Mora threatening to equalise and Roberto Alvarado's low shot being saved by USA goalkeeper Matt Freese. Freese also parried away Mora's powerful strike in the 40th minute.

The second half saw Mexico as the more threatening side, with the USA struggling to create chances. Mexico's persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Johan Vazquez's flick-on from a free-kick was met by Edson Alvarez, who scored a header to secure the victory for Mexico.

Despite starting well, the USA lost composure in the second part of the first half, according to USA captain, Tim Ream. The USA struggled with moving the ball around calmly when they won it in the second half. Alex Freeman almost scored for the USA on the stroke of half-time, but his header hit the face of the Mexico stopper.

Raul Jimenez celebrated his goal by showing a shirt with the name and number 20 of late teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain last week. However, there is no mention of any tribute to Diogo Jota during or around the Mexico vs USA 2023 Gold Cup final in the available sources.

Edson Alvarez's winning goal was a significant moment for him, as he had limped off in tears at the same venue during Mexico's opening game of the Copa America last year.
