United States Senator Rubio and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu hold a meeting, illustrating minimal daylight in their shared perspectives
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, airstrikes have claimed the lives of at least 18 people, including children, in the crowded tent camp of Muwasi. The camp, which has been regularly targeted by Israeli strikes, is now urging Palestinians to head south.
Meanwhile, Senator Marco Rubio is visiting Qatar to show support for Israel during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session. Rubio met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss Israel's plans in Gaza and Qatar's potential mediating role.
However, the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians have not been substantive since 2009. Rubio and Netanyahu believe the only way to end the conflict in Gaza is through the elimination of Hamas and the release of the remaining 48 hostages.
Israel and the United States are united in their stance against Hamas, with Netanyahu and Rubio downplaying international criticism of Israel's airstrikes on Hamas leaders in Qatar and its bombardment of Gaza City.
In a recent development, a Doha attack killed at least five lower-ranking Hamas members and a member of the Qatari security forces, pausing mediation efforts. This attack comes after Israel destroyed another high-rise building in Gaza City, as it continues its offensive.
The situation in Gaza is further complicated by the fact that Hamas has stated it will only free the hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Strikes in Gaza City have also claimed the life of a local journalist, Mohammed al-Kuifi, and others.
As the conflict continues, some Israeli politicians have suggested the possibility of annexing part of the West Bank. This proposal is met with strong objections from the Palestinians and several European countries and Canada, who plan to recognize a Palestinian state.
Despite the challenges, there are signs of hope. On Monday, images showed a steady stream of Palestinians walking and driving along the safe corridor designated by Israel. Additionally, COGAT, the Israeli military body in charge of civilian affairs in Gaza, has increased the amount of food, medical equipment, and shelter supplies it allows into Gaza. COGAT has also repaired water lines and power lines for desalination plants in Gaza.
As the situation in Gaza unfolds, the international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this long-standing conflict. Rubio is planning to visit Qatar on Tuesday to further discussions on the matter.
