Article:

North Korea denounces the U.S.'s proposed space-based missile defense system, "Golden Dome," regarding it as a potential catalyst for a global nuclear and space arms race. In a statement conveyed by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang accused the U.S. of provocatively intending to militarize space.

The plan for the "Golden Dome" was first unveiled by U.S. President Donald Trump during his election campaign, followed by a detailed presentation at the White House last week. The system, once completed within three years, is expected to offer protection against ballistic and identified threats from other parts of the world, regardless of their launch location, including from space.

Trump described the "Golden Dome" as critically important for the United States' success and security, emphasizing its potential to intercept missiles whether they are launched conventionally or with nuclear warheads. The announcement has faced criticism from China, which expressed concerns about its implications for the global strategic balance and urged Trump to abandon the project.

North Korea, considered a nuclear-armed state following its first nuclear test in 2006, has continued its nuclear and missile programs despite a series of United Nations sanctions primarily due to support from China and Russia. These sanctions, in place since 2017, are not time-limited.

According to Hong Min, a researcher from the Korea Institute for National Unification, North Korea's strong reaction to the "Golden Dome" indicates potential concerns about the proposed system's potential to significantly weaken the effectiveness of their nuclear arsenal, including intercontinental missiles. If completed, North Korea may be forced to develop new weapons to bypass or break through the system, as per the researcher's analysis.

Tensions between North and South Korea remain high, with both nations still technically at war, despite the Korean War's conclusion in 1953. The U.S. maintains a military presence in South Korea to protect the region.

The "Golden Dome" system, if implemented, would represent a significant expansion of the United States' missile defense capabilities, potentially costing hundreds of billions of dollars, though President Trump has suggested a lower cost of $175 billion. The system is designed to operate across multiple domains—land, sea, and space—using advanced technologies for enhanced protection. Implications for regional tensions, potential arms race dynamics, and geopolitical implications are concerns that have been raised by experts and analysts alike.

  1. The proposal for the new missile defense system, known as the "Golden Dome," has sparked debate in the realm of science and technology, as critics and experts consider its potential impact on space-and-astronomy and the possible acceleration of a global arms race.
  2. Amid the discussion about the "Golden Dome" system, the politics surrounding this issue have taken center stage, with the United States facing criticism from China over concerns about the system's effects on war-and-conflicts and the global strategic balance.
  3. The US plans for a new space-based missile defense system, the "Golden Dome," have provoked strong reactions from countries like North Korea, who fear the potential consequences it could have on their nuclear programs and the general-news landscape, particularly regarding peace and security.
