In the final years of the Trump administration, the United States found itself at the centre of a global trade war. President Trump launched a series of tariff measures, affecting various countries and categories of goods.

The tariff rates imposed or threatened by the Trump administration varied significantly across countries. For instance, Lesotho, one of the least-known countries, faced a 50% tariff on its exports to the United States. India, a major global player, was hit with a 50% tariff on its exports, escalating geopolitical tensions.

Other countries, such as Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Madagascar, were also subjected to high tariffs of 40% to 48%. South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, and Liechtenstein faced a 15% tariff, while South Africa and Nigeria faced a 30% and 15% tariff, respectively.

The agreement between the U.S. and China, which was set to expire on August 12, was extended for an additional 90 days. However, China still faces a 30% tariff, with additional tariffs on certain products.

The European Union (EU) was subjected to reciprocal tariffs, with some products at 15%, while others were up to 50% or 200% depending on the product duty category. The Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Australia also faced threatened or implemented tariffs.

The tariff measures targeted sectors including motor vehicles, pharmaceuticals, computer equipment, and oil & gas, affecting global supply chains and consumer prices. The White House's list of tariffed territories included some remote or lightly populated regions, sometimes based on inaccurate trade data classifications.

Trump's new policy imposed a baseline tariff of 10% on all imports into the U.S., affecting nearly all countries. This move was part of a broader Executive Order that took effect in April 2025.

It's important to note that some "reciprocal tariffs" were implemented based on trade reciprocity formulas, but these are criticized as being unilateral and often overstate foreign tariffs compared to actual tariffs imposed by trading partners.

This summary reflects the complex and evolving nature of the tariffs within Trump's global trade war, including both imposed and threatened tariffs across specific countries and product categories. The tariff measures had far-reaching impacts on global trade and economic relationships.
