United States impedes adoption of solo Security Council resolution condemning Israel's actions
The United Nations Security Council convened on Thursday to vote on a resolution regarding Gaza, initiated by Algeria. The proposal received the support of 14 member states, but the United States vetoed the passage of the resolution.
The resolution demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and the lifting of restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid to the region. However, it did not demand that Hamas disarm or the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. Additionally, the resolution did not condemn Hamas, nor did it condemn the October 7 massacre.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, strongly condemned the resolution, describing it as a 'performance' and a 'daily reality' for Israel. Danon stated that the resolution is a form of surrender and that Israel will continue to apply military pressure until all the hostages are returned. He further suggested that those who care about the future of Gaza should work to remove Hamas from Gaza.
Morgan Ortagus, Counsellor at the US Mission to the UN, also opposed the resolution, stating that it wrongly legitimizes the false narratives benefiting Hamas. Ortagus emphasized that the resolution failed to condemn Hamas and recognize Israel's right to defend itself.
Egypt, the state that proposed the application of an unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip without condemning Hamas, remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict. As the situation in Gaza continues to escalate, the international community must work towards a resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of all civilians, while also holding those responsible for violence accountable.
