In a significant breakthrough, American military officials disclosed on Wednesday that they successfully captured an Islamic State group (IS) commander during joint coalition operations in Iraq and Syria.
According to the US Central Command, additional IS members also perished during these operations, aiming to prevent the Islamic outfit from regaining its grasp.
US Central Command announced via X that the said operations, spanning from May 21-27, managed to "disrupt and degrade" IS's capacity to "reconstitute, plan, organize, and execute attacks on civilians and US and partnered forces across the region."
Alongside the capture of a top IS leader, the operations yielded six engagements, five in Iraq and one in Syria, with two more IS members being killed, two more taken into custody, and multiple weapons seized.
USCENTCOM Commander Michael Erik Kurilla affirmed, "Operations like these demonstrate USCENTCOM's unwavering commitment, along with our allies and partners, to curtailing the ISIS threat in the region."
Tactics in Baghdad, coordinated by Iraqi forces, took place across various locations such as the Salah al-Din Governorate, Kirkuk Governorate, and Al-Fallujah, known for IS member activity and sporadic attacks against military personnel.
